Collateral Risk Network Statement on Appraiser’s Email Sent to Dr. Elizabeth Korver-Glenn

2/28/2022

On Wednesday, February 23rd, six organizations – American Society of Appraisers, American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, Appraisal Institute, International Association of Assessing Officers, MBREA|The Association for Valuation Professionals™, and National Society of Real Estate Appraisers, provided a statement in an email sent to Dr. Elizabeth Korver-Glenn, a leading researcher on the topic of bias and discrimination in housing valuation. The statement condemns the thoughts, language, and tone of the email sent to Dr. Korver-Glenn by an appraiser, in the strongest possible terms.

The Collateral Risk Network strongly supports the sentiment as expressed in the organizations’ statement and further categorically condemns the thoughts, language, and tone of the email, in which a real estate appraiser displayed blatant disrespect, ignorance, and outright racism in their tone and comments. There is no place in our profession for the race-based vitriol expressed in the email.

To that end, the CRN is devising an educational program to expose the appraisal community to proper training on Fair Housing laws as they impact the appraisal profession. It is imperative that the CRN produce the “gold standard” course on Fair Housing which is why we are engaging fair housing experts to partner on this initiative. Additionally, we are developing training for our CRN members on how to build a Fair Housing Compliance Management Program.

The Collateral Risk Network is committed to working on the issues of bias and discrimination in the valuation profession in a constructive, proactive manner, with respect for all views and participants in the conversation.

Collateral Risk Network, Inc.
