In 1963 President John F. Kennedy designated May as Senior Citizens Month and then in 1980 President Jimmy Carter changed the name to Older Americans Month . The U.S. Census Bureau has compiled statistics for those 65 and older – and not all of them are capital markets guys. In 2060, the projected population of people 65 and older is 98.2 million, whereas the projected number of baby boomers at this same period is 2.4 million, with the youngest age of the baby boomer to be 96 years old. It’s anticipated that 2056 will be the first year where those 65 and older will outnumber those less than 18 years old – don’t ask me how they can pretend to predict birth rates 25 years from now. In 2013, the median income for people 65 and older was $35,611 and 9.5% of people in this age cohort were in poverty…(read more)
